Ahila Sekar, an altruistic female, with much alacrity is now pursuing her Masters in Humanities and social science, at the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar. Her Research areas include Social Culture Impacts on Architecture, Archeological Studies, Human Settlements and How Urban Transition Occurred in India. She holds the Bachelor of Architecture degree from Adhiyaman College of Engineering, Hosur (Affiliated to Anna University). She has worked in various assignments which molded her as an Architect, like freelancing projects, Documentation of Nellaiappar Temple for INTACH and her thesis on “Architecture in Underground space planning and its behavior in social context”. On being an Architect, she got a great opportunity, to work with Ar. Ramani Shankar, the renowned personality known for his dedicated service in Architecture. Apart from academics, she had a strong belief that “Each and every child deserves to be provided with education” and thus worked part-time in SIP Academy Trichy, to teach basic English to the kindergarten children from May 2013 to May 2018.

I am a student of English literature and am broadly interested in post-colonial literature and the roles of hybridity and identity in it. My other research interests include popular culture studies, new media and translation studies. I have been curious about various subjects in the Humanities and Social Sciences since my school days itself. The curiosity and complexity of how the society functions and what role we all play (as a society and as individuals) intrigues me. Having a Defence background and having traveled across the country, gave me insights of various social institutions, the good, bad and the changeable, the intangible structure we make and that we are all a part of – Our Society. Thus, I went on to study Sociology, Economics, and Psychology in my Bachelors. My research and further academic interests are in Public Policy and International Relations. I like reading up on Geo-Politics, I also have a keen interest in understanding the Indian Administrative system and the Rural-Urban disparities.

I am Gnana Selvam. I have done my under-graduation in Architecture from NIT Hamirpur and post-graduation in Animation and film design from IDC, IIT Bombay. My area of research interests is cinema and society, Narrative structures, Design and perception, traditional art forms of India, Cinema and cognition, vernacular architecture, and Film studies. My other personal obsessions are filmmaking, photography, architecture as a reflection of status-quo, chai pe charcha, and sustainable agricultural practices and forestry.

My major interest lies in human development in respect to public health and integration of technology, social science, and psychology for social intervention in public health. Muhammed Shahil PT is a student of MA Society and culture in the department of Humanities and social science, IIT Gandhinagar. He pursued his Bachelor degree in History from Jamia Millia University, New Delhi. He is keenly interested in Modern Indian history. He is also interested in doing a deep research on the impact of British colonialism on social Reformation in India as taking Travancore as a case study. For this particular topic, his research work will be a multi-disciplinary approach in which his studies and readings interact with many other disciplines like Anthropology and Sociology. He believes IIT Gandhinagar is the most adequate place for this. Traveling different places is one his hobbies and he has managed to write his traveling experiences in many regional magazines and online media. Along with this he also interested in Movie studies and has written a few reviews on many critically acclaimed Malayalam movies.
I am a student of Sociology and broadly interested in the topics of gender and intersectional feminist thought. My other research interests include gender and public policy and the impact of governmental policies on women and the third gender. I am a History graduate, and I’m interested in the interaction between different people and Visual History. For this reason, I plan on working with museums, to make History more enjoyable for the masses. My other interests include theatre, visual arts and contemporary modes of popular entertainment like social media, especially YouTube.
I received my graduation degree in economics from Central University of Karnataka. Presently, I am pursuing my masters in societies and culture at IIT Gandhinagar. My research areas include primarily the comparative religion studies, socio-economic conditions of marginalised sections in south India specifically (Telangana). My other interest includes the roots of social hierarchy, religious dogmas prevailing in current society and cultural belief system, and in developmental economics.
I am currently pursuing M.A. Society and Culture at IIT Gandhinagar. I am interested in the “Public Policy and Human Development” track of the programme. My highest academic qualification till date is BA in Social Sciences with a specialization in Sociology from the University of Hyderabad (UoH), College for Integrated Studies (2015-2018). My research interests include Women and Gender Studies, Developmental Studies, School education system in India. I have also worked as a research intern at the Centre for Innovations in Public Systems, ASCI at Hyderabad and Manovikas Kendra at Kolkata during my semester breaks. I also have participated at a paper-presentation conference at the UoH with a village-immersion camp report.
Sevgi Demiroglu is a postgraduate student in the Master of Arts in Society and Culture Programme of Humanities and Social Sciences in Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar. She holds a B.A. Hons. in English Language and Literature from the Department of Western Languages and Literatures, Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey. Her research areas include identity politics in South Asia, post/colonial writing, literary theory and criticism, gender studies and queer theory, Philosophy of Religion and Jaina Philosophy. In 2015, she joined Indian Institute of Technology Bombay as an exchange student and studied Indian Culture and Tradition, Indian Philosophy and Indian Astronomy in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2016, she worked on a project in this institute and in her project, named “Anekānta and Différance: A Study of Jaina and Derridean Understanding of Reality”, she analyzed the works Tattvārthsūtra of the Jain Acharya Umaswami and Derrida’s essay Différance. In 2017, she joined the Pedagogical Formation Certificate Programme of Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey. In the meantime, she worked as a preschool English teacher and provided children with cultural elements from different parts of the world, observed and reported their language development in relation to their age and background.
My broader research interests would include conflict studies and study of citizenship and human rights using both sociological and anthropological approaches. I’m a Bachelor of Design with a specialization in Textiles. My research interests include, among other things, active citizenship, holistic education, and the design of public spaces.
Being a student of science till 12th and then shifting to Arts was based on my keen interest to figure out the concept of Society. St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai gave me the opportunity to explore Sociology as a subject. During the course of time, my interest in research started developing. The research areas I am curious to explore are public policy making, administration in India, Media research, Archaeology, and sciences.
I received my undergraduate degree in B.A. Humanities (Hons.) – History, Literature, Philosophy – from Azim Premji University in Bangalore. My main interest is in the field of history, especially regional histories. My undergraduate research looked at the activities of the Basel Mission – German-speaking Swiss Protestant evangelists – who came to Malabar (present-day northern Kerala) in the mid-19th century and worked towards building a casteless Christian community in the region. My other interests, broadly, include cultural studies and film studies (mostly on trends in Malayalam cinema) and literature. I am currently pursuing my postgraduate degree from IIT-Gandhinagar in MA Society and Culture.
Zaphya Jena holds a BA in Psychology and a Post Graduate Certificate in Counselling Psychology from Fergusson College. Her undergraduate research project studied the relationship between Instant Messaging and Self Esteem, Rejection Sensitivity and Perceived Social Support amongst young adults. Her research interests are in the field of Public Mental Health, and how psychosocial factors affect mental well-being. She is also interested in gender studies, queer representation in media and social psychology.
