Student-led Events

HSS@IITGN MA, MSc, and PhD students are active in coordinating and leading clubs, events, and various reading circles.


HSS Reading Group

HSS Reading Group is coordinated by faculty and students to read and critically discuss books, articles, or academically-informed media pieces outside a classroom setting, and relate them to contemporary social and political issues. Recent readings have included George Orwell’s 1984, Arjun Appadurai’s Fear of Small Numbers, and articles from Economic and Political Weekly on citizenship and Article 370. The reading group generally meets fortnightly during the semester.

SBAMKAV Study Cirle

The Savitri-Birsa-Ambedkar-Malcolm-Kanshiram-Ansari-Veerammal (SBAMKAV) study circle was started by students with the help of faculty to discuss issues related to and read works by those from the marginalized communities. Readings have included works by B.R. Ambedkar, Trans-Dalit Activists, and writers from Northeast India. The study circle generally meets fortnightly during the semester.

HSS Film Club

Students from HSS also are active in screening art-house, regional language, and non-mainstream films for the community. Screenings recently have included Sairat, Once Upon a time in North Chennai, Jallikattu, Pan’s Labyrinth, Haider, Aamis, and Still Life.


HSS students are also involved in running the Institute chapter of SPIC-MACAY, bringing well known classical musicians to the campus. Recent performances have included those by Pandit Kaivalya Kumar, Ustad Murad Ali Khan, Soumitra Thakur, and Kala Ramanath. SPIC-MACAY works in coordination with the IITGN Cultural Council and Sargam, the music club at IITGN.


HSS Students have been involved in putting up various theater shows and events. Recent performances have included Forgotten Holocaust: A play based on the Bengal Famine, and Dastangoi: Qissa-e-Manto.
