The goals of this Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC) project is the theme of the time and is drawn from The United Nations’ Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, one of the most ambitious and important global agreements in recent history. The traditional focus was on the environment, particularly environmental degradation. Cultural heritage has only recently been incorporated into this agenda, as increasing globalization has eroded cultural diversity. There is an urgent need for research to redress its prior omission.
This project derives from the premise that memory is vital to all forms of heritage and social memory is inevitably bound up with the variety of social processes that constitute communities and their identity. One of the key factors is strengthening a sense of community is fortifying people’s relationship to place. Indigenous archaeology and the study of cultural heritage has the potential to forge such ties.
