Description

This symposium engages with critical interpretation of cultural and literary texts. From this, we move to a larger discursive interpenetration in which multiple disciplines speak to one another. We consolidate acts of analysis and critique into discourses, poised at the interdisciplinary cusp of literature, political thought, mythology and medicine.

The first keynote by Prof. Saumyabrata Choudhury invokes Ambedkar and Marx. It dwells on the intersection between division of labour and division of labourers to resituate questions of caste and human dignity. If this talk deals with a transnational thinking of the political, the other keynote by Prof. Debashis Bandyopadhyay reads medical discourses and case histories of trauma in women, diagnosed with breast cancer. It combines medical processes, life-experiences with interpretive acts, derived from Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis. Medicine and psychoanalytic thought together tilt this interpretive act towards a discursive interpenetration. Medical humanities emerges as an inter-disciplinary approach here.
