Brief Description of the Project:

This project examines how the glass industry in India responded to changes in trade patterns around the Indian Ocean starting around the mid-1st millennium BCE to the late Medieval Period. This project aims to identify possible regions in India were glass was manufactured by characterizing raw materials with a composition compatible with the different glass compositions of Indian origin. Our approach is to combine elemental and isotope analysis in order to compare trace elements and strontium and neodymium isotope signatures in potential raw material sources and glass. Lead isotope analysis in glass will be carried out to provenance colouring ingredients that often contain lead in significant quantities.
