Shadow Liberation is a participatory theatre initiative facilitating sexual assault prevention in Universities and Colleges. Utilizing trauma-informed and research-based practice, Shadow Liberation blends Drama Therapy and Theatre of the Oppressed (bystander intervention) with Shadow Theatre techniques. Shadow Theatre offers distancing strategies conducive to representing traumatic or taboo material in abstracted ways.

Shadow Liberation was founded by Evan Hastings at the Srishti Institute of Art, Design & Technology, India in 2010. Since then, Evan has refined the Shadow Liberation approach to sexual assault prevention through work with 35 Tertiary Institutions across 3 continents. This talk will describe the Shadow Liberation process in relationship to theory and research.
